Ricky Van Veen's GET EXCITED

January 1, 2009

Once again, the touchy-feely management fads that always spring up in years of plenty (remember the guff about “the search for meaning” and “the importance of brand me”) are being ditched in favour of more brutal command-and-control methods. Having grown up in good times, Net Geners have laboured under the illusion that the world owed them a living. But hopping between jobs to find one that meets your inner spiritual needs is not so easy when there are no jobs to hop to.

I LOL’d at “managing the brand me.” I love how the economic downturn instantly changed that to “You want a job? Then do this.”

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the Public Treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the Public Treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy always followed by dictatorship.

The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been two-hundred years. These nations have progressed throught this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to abundance; from abundance to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back again into bondage.”

A quote making the rounds on the retired father e-mail circuit. Author unknown. On its face a conservative favorite as it attacks heavy social program spending, though I think it says more about the general transfer of wealth from future generations to our own. When that fiscal deferment catches up with the society is when things collapse.

Cialella then sat down to watch the movie.

Phila. man shot because family talked during movie.

Two things:

1) Shooting someone in the theatre and then sitting back down to watch the rest of the film? That’s dedication to cinema.

2) This dude looks more like a “Day The Earth Stood Still” kinda guy than a Benjamin Button guy.

“Do I get the channel that your TV program is on?”

“Yeah, it’s on MTV. Your cable has it.”

“That’s what I thought — the channel with the music and the rock and rollers. So I flipped through the channels and looked for punk rockers playing music and I couldn’t find it.”

I originally took out my camera for this sign because I have a fetish for unecessary quotation marks. But then I realized that the quotes also are pretty insulting to blind people. “Yeah… we’re on to you and your tricks, blindie.”

MTV, drunk on profits from The Hills, decided to give us our own TV show.

We’re excited. More details to come, obviously.
