I’ve been thinking about this for a while (naturally even more so during election season) and couldn’t agree more. It seems like several times a week somebody in the public eye is forced to apologize over some “outrage-inducing” thing they said. And every time the thing I keep asking myself is this: who are these supposed people who are being offended? Because you never hear from them, you only hear from someone allegedly speaking on their behalf.

Case in point: are there really people out there who were emotionally distraught by Robert De Niro making a silly joke at a cocktail party?

I propose a new rule. If you’re going to call somebody out for being offensive, you’re required to write down on a piece of paper at least five actual living humans who were offended. Using a number two pencil. Names that are written using pens or mechanical pencils WILL NOT BE SCORED.
